Egypt Allocates 90 Square Kilometers to “AMEA Power” for Renewable Energy Projects

July 23, 2024

The Egyptian government, represented by the New and Renewable Energy Authority, plans to allocate 90 square kilometers of land to AMEA Power, a subsidiary of Al Nowais Group from the UAE, in the coming weeks for renewable energy projects.

The Egyptian Cabinet has approved AMEA Power’s proposal to implement additional renewable energy projects in Egypt with a total capacity of 1,500 MW. Necessary procedures with the Emirati company will be carried out, and the land will be granted on a usufruct basis.

Twenty square kilometers in the new Benban area of Aswan will be allocated to AMEA Power to establish solar power plants with a capacity of 500 MW, with investments reaching $500 million. This allocation is part of the land designated for the New and Renewable Energy Authority, according to a presidential decree allocating 47 square kilometers in Benban.

Additionally, around 70 square kilometers in the Gulf of Suez will be allocated to the Emirati company for wind power plants with a total capacity of 1,000 MW, with investments nearing $1 billion. The company will complete the necessary project procedures with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company over the next two weeks, including setting the project timeline, financial closure, and commercial operation period, which Egypt aims to achieve before summer 2025.

Sources indicate that solar power plants may take 8 to 10 months to complete after studies and permits are obtained, while wind power plants require a longer period due to the need for wind speed measurements and bird migration studies.
