The European Union is about to impose sanctions on the import of Russian gas

March 18, 2024

The European Union Energy Commission, Cadre Simpson, said in its meeting in the United States that the Union is working to put pressure on importers of Russian gas in Europe. With the aim of reducing imports from Russia and increasing imports from alternatives such as the United States.

Although Russian natural gas imports to Europe decreased at huge rates after the Russian-Ukrainian war, its imports of liquefied natural gas increased. Therefore, Simpson confirmed that there will be a law that will come into effect to limit the import of liquefied natural gas.

Simpson added that by taking this step, the European Union will be able to offset the Russian tide from other countries such as the United States. Therefore, there will be no supply problems or problems related to “security risks”.

On the other hand, Russia previously confirmed that it would not be affected by the reduction in European imports of natural gas and liquefied natural gas due to the direction of gas transportation shipments and pipelines to China and Asian countries in general. This compensates for the losses of shipments that were supposed to reach Europe. Therefore, Russia's gas export rates are expected to improve in 2024 to reach 108 billion cubic meters after it was 91.4 billion cubic meters in 2023.
