The nuclear energy program in Algeria is expected to be launched during the coming period in light of Algeria’s efforts to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on oil and gas to generate electricity. In light of this, the Ministry of Energy and Mines in Algeria signed a memorandum of understanding with the Russian company Rosatom, which specializes in nuclear energy, to cooperate in the field of peaceful use. For the nuclear shot.
The memorandum came on the sidelines of the 13th edition of the International Forum “Atom Expo”, most of which took place in the Sochi resort in the Russian Federation on March 25 and 26, 2024, in line with the idea of introducing nuclear energy in Algeria into the country’s energy model with the aim of securing the increasing demand for electricity, in addition to reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The goal of the agreement is to develop nuclear applications for peaceful purposes, and Algeria is working on preparing a national strategy aimed at introducing nuclear energy into the energy mix, taking into account the transition to clean and environmental energy. The Minister of Energy, Mohamed Arkab, stated that nuclear energy plays a fundamental and important role in embodying the strategy that aims to transition to clean energy in Algeria.
The Russian and Algerian sides discussed aspects of cooperation to develop the field of nuclear energy and the method of developing the use of nuclear technology. The two sides discussed the need to exchange experiences and common interests in the nuclear energy sector in Algeria.
The "Atom Expo" forum was held during the year 2024 in the Sirius Park of Science and Arts, and was opened by the Director General of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Moreno Grossi. The forum was held under the slogan "Clean energy…we create the future together."
