Reuters published that the decrease in rainfall in India, along with the rise in demand for energy, prompted the country to increase its reliance on oil and coal to meet energy demand, in exchange for reducing hydroelectric power production in the year ending in March 2024 by 16.3%, which is the lowest percentage in 38 years.

India recorded another record in its production of renewable energy. The contribution of renewable energy to the Indian energy mix decreased in the same period to 11.7% instead of 11.8% in the year ending March 2023.

Hydropower contributed 8.3% during that period, according to the Indian grid, and this percentage is lower than the usual average contribution of hydropower in the ten years prior to 2020, which was 12.3%.

While overall energy production in India this year rose by 10.3%, the proportion of coal-fired energy production rose by 13.9% while the contribution of renewable energy rose by only 9.7%.
