India is activating the emergency clause, especially with regard to issuing an order for mothballed gas-fired power plants; In order to work during the summer as the demand for electricity begins to rise.
The Indian Ministry of Energy stated in a statement on Saturday, April 13, 2024, that the order will be in effect for the two months ending on June 30, as part of preparations for the next high demand period. India's capacity to generate power from gas amounts to about 25 gigawatts, which has been underutilized for many years and is considered unable to compete in the competitively priced energy market.
Some stations are suffering from a state of decay, due to being stopped for a long time, and the South Asian country is facing a hot summer, which leads to an increase in electricity consumption, and peak demand is expected to reach a record level of about 250 gigawatts, and the Meteorological Department expects this season to be even hotter. It's the usual thing.
Maintaining the stability of the energy supply is considered crucial in dealing with heat wave conditions, in addition to maintaining the flow of water, and the national elections put pressure on the government to reduce power outages, and this is based on the Ministry’s order of Article 11 of the Electricity Law, which enables the government to oblige any generating station To act according to special directions in exceptional circumstances such as a natural disaster or a threat to national security.
Federal Energy Minister Pankaj Agarwal confirmed that the order is already valid until the end of next June for stations that are designed to operate on imported coal, and it is expected to be extended until October 15.
