“Ukraine” expands in the field of nuclear energy despite the war

April 15, 2024

Ukraine announced the start of launching two American-designed nuclear reactors using American technology from Westinghouse Electric at the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant. This comes in stark defiance of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian electricity grid.

Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko described the project as important for Ukraine during the period it is currently going through in its war with Russia. Because providing energy from the two nuclear reactors will not only meet Ukraine's energy need but will also increase Ukraine's financial stock. Which will push it to buy weapons and continue the war with Russia.

The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was attended by senior Ukrainian officials, including Energoatom President Petro Cutin, Energy Minister German Galushchenko, US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink, and Westinghouse Nuclear Energy CEO Patrick Fragman.

These reactors will have a huge capacity of more than 1,100 megawatts per unit. This makes it among the most powerful nuclear reactors in the world. The duration of building one reactor in peacetime is estimated at about 5 years, while the estimated cost of each reactor is at least 5 billion dollars.

Patrick Fragman, CEO of Westinghouse Nuclear Energy, confirmed that the first unit of the two reactors will be built according to an “accelerated schedule” thanks to Ukraine’s purchase of heavy equipment ready for installation, with the US Export-Import Bank participating in financing the project.
