The Gas Exporting Countries Forum published a report on Algeria and its export of natural gas to Europe; The report linked the Ukrainian war to the interruption of Russian gas supplies to Europe and the opening of new horizons for Algeria. It has been able to strengthen its position as a major player in the European energy market.

Algeria's share of gas exports to Europe rose to 20% during the first nine months of 2023. To rank second after Norway, while Russia's share decreased to 17%.

Algerian gas exports via pipelines to Europe remain stable at 23 billion cubic metres. Making it a reliable supplier to the continent.

Italy is the largest beneficiary of this partnership. It increased its imports from Algeria, and relations between the two countries were strengthened through joint projects. In September 2022, the Italian company “Eni” acquired British Petroleum (BP) in Algeria, including the concessions of the “In Amenas” gas fields. And “Indeed, Salih.”

Eni seeks to reduce dependence on Russian gas, which represented 45% of what Italy imports before the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Algeria seeks to increase its capabilities in the field of energy export to Europe and study the possibility of expanding in the field of renewable energy, while emphasizing the continuity of investment in gas as part of the country’s sustainable development plan.

This crisis represents a golden opportunity for Algeria to strengthen its economy and achieve sustainable development in the long term, while highlighting the importance of energy security and international cooperation in facing global challenges.
