An official source in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan revealed that there are 52 public fast charging stations for electric cars and 13 private stations distributed across all governorates of the Kingdom. The Jordanian government seeks to accelerate the deployment of electric charging stations to promote the adoption of electric vehicles as a sustainable alternative to traditional transportation.
Engineer Ziad Al-Saaida, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Authority, confirmed that 364 permits had been issued to establish electric charging stations, including 321 public stations. 80% of these stations have obtained their permits with the aim of accelerating their establishment.
The Authority has developed an ambitious plan to establish 270 public charging stations during the next year, with all requirements being completed during the first quarter of 2025. Thus, the total number of public charging stations in Jordan will reach 400 stations by 2025.
The Jordanian government attaches great importance to distributing charging stations equally throughout the Kingdom. It aims to reduce the distance between each station to less than 100 km.
As part of its efforts to encourage the use of electric vehicles, the Authority granted more than 3,000 approvals to obtain electricity meters for charging these vehicles in their owners’ homes.
The Authority carries out inspection tours at gas stations to verify the installation of electric charging stations. It grants a grace period of one month to stations that were established after 2021 and have not installed these stations. In the event of non-compliance, legal action will be taken, up to the closure of those stations.
The Authority raised the charging commission for fuel stations by about 5 piasters, with the aim of encouraging them to provide more electric charging stations.
The Authority is also working on developing a smart application on mobile phones that enables electric vehicle users to easily reach the nearest charging station. It is expected that this application will be available within one to one and a half months.
It is noteworthy that the number of electric vehicles in Jordan has reached about 100 thousand vehicles. The government seeks to significantly increase this number in the coming years, out of its belief in the importance of renewable energy in protecting the environment and achieving sustainable development.
