Sudanese media reported that the work of absorbing electrical energy from the solar energy station at the North Cement Factory in the city of Al-Damer has been completed, as part of the electricity sector’s efforts to benefit from renewable and alternative energies, in light of the difficult circumstances that the country is going through, which include the loss of many generating stations and transmission lines. And distribution, and a large number of conversion stations.
The Sudan Electricity Holding Company indicated last Friday, April 26, 2024, that the engineering team, technicians and workers at the Sudanese Electricity Distribution Company exerted a lot of effort and time to continue and complete the work, and they were actually able to transfer energy amounting to about 34 megawatts from the solar station on the same day.
This aims to operate cement factories more during the day in addition to clearly reducing outage hours. This comes in a step considered as the first stage, and the second stage is scheduled to be completed by expanding the capacity of the station’s design in the coming period.
Sudan is distinguished by its geographical location in North Africa. It has huge potential for exploiting solar energy. Statistics confirm that the electricity network covers only about 35% of Sudanese territory. This makes solar energy an ideal option for providing electricity in remote rural areas that are characterized by sunrise throughout the year. It receives 6 kilowatt-hours per square meter per day; This provides a great opportunity to produce electricity through solar panels.
In general, solar energy is considered a huge economic resource that can contribute to increasing income and providing job opportunities. Khartoum has already begun implementing projects to exploit solar energy, not only in generating electricity but also in heating water, desalinating drinking water, and drying crops.
