Three Russian Oil Tankers Stranded in the Baltic Sea Due to British Sanctions

June 23, 2024

Three Russian oil tankers remain stranded in the Baltic Sea due to recent British sanctions targeting the Russian “shadow” fleet. One tanker is anchored off the port of Ust-Luga, another off the coast of Estonia, and the third is heading towards Ust-Luga.

These three tankers, along with a chemical and petroleum products tanker, were added to the British sanctions list on June 13 as part of a broad package aimed at Moscow. The UK seeks to disrupt a network of hundreds of tankers used to transport Russian oil through this move.

The “Rubin” tanker is one of the most well-known “shadow” tankers, previously detected transporting Russian oil under its former name “Turba.” According to shipping information, the “Ocean AMZ” tanker was scheduled to load a shipment of Urals crude in Ust-Luga but was later replaced by the “Asher” tanker.

It is worth noting that other oil tankers subject to U.S. sanctions have also been stranded at sea for monthsdue to transporting oil at prices exceeding the price cap imposed by Western countries on Russian exports.
