Wind Surpasses Coal in Generating Electricity in America

July 10, 2024

New data issued by the US Energy Information Administration revealed that electricity generation from wind energy in the United States exceeded its generation from coal for the first time last April.

According to a report published by the Quartz website, electricity generated from wind reached 47.7 million megawatts during April, while electricity generation from coal reached 37.2 million megawatts.

In a previous report, the Energy Information Administration expected that coal-fired power plants would witness the largest rate of decline among various energy sources by 2024.

This expectation is due to the increased reliance on renewable energy sources, the decline in natural gas prices, and the continued retirement of coal generation plants from service.
