Five well-established development finance institutions: the Southern African Regional Development Bank, the Industrial Development Bank (both government banks in South Africa), the African Development Bank, the African Export-Import Bank, and the New Development Bank (the financing arm of the BRICS group) have begun to cooperate to revive the huge Inga Dam project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which aspires to be the largest electric generating station in the world.
This international cooperation aims to overcome the challenges that have faced the project over the years, including government corruption scandals and high costs, by attracting private sector investments, preparing the necessary infrastructure, and providing initial financing.
The initial agreement between the Government of Congo and Natural Oilfield Services in Nigeria to build a 7 GW plant at the site is an important step towards achieving this goal.
The Inga Dam is expected to play an important role in the development of the economy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the African continent as a whole by providing clean, reliable electricity at affordable prices.
