Malta’s Prime Minister, Robert Abela, expressed his country’s interest in strengthening partnerships and cooperation with Libya in the renewable energy sector, highlighting Libya’s significant economic potential in this field.
During discussions with Libya’s interim Government of National Unity Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, Abela addressed investment issues in renewable energy. He emphasized that Libya is seen not only as a country with great economic potential but also as an opportunity to address irregular migration and enhance Libya’s economic prospects.
Abela revealed a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Malta and Libya in July 2023, aiming to revive a major project to build a solar farm on Libya’s coast. He stated that this solar energy project would contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, stabilizing energy prices, and demonstrating Libya’s commitment to a long-term vision for the energy sector beyond its local scope.
Abela noted that the choice of Libya’s coast for the solar farm is due to the availability of vast land areas, which the Maltese islands lack. He added that, alongside using a portion of this energy, Malta could sell the surplus energy to European markets. The project aims to connect the solar farm to the Maltese islands via an electric link, allowing both countries to export energy to European markets.
This initiative is a significant step toward enhancing cooperation between Malta and Libya in the renewable energy sector and achieving their shared goals of sustainability and economic development.
