Sellafield Ltd, the operator of the largest nuclear waste site in the UK, celebrated the delivery of its first fully electric locomotive as part of its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance fleet reliability.

The new CB40 locomotive, weighing approximately 40 tons, was manufactured by Clayton Equipment in Staffordshire in just four months.

This electric locomotive represents the latest addition to the internal railway fleet at the Sellafield nuclear complex, one of the largest railway networks in Britain.

Developed to improve railway operational efficiency and sustainability, the CB40 offers additional comfort for drivers and increased maneuverability.

Sellafield’s acquisition of the electric locomotive aligns with its strategy to adopt green technologies and achieve the UK’s carbon neutrality goals by 2050.

The CB40 locomotive is ideal for long-distance operations without frequent recharging, thanks to its large battery and regenerative braking system that allow the reuse of electricity generated during braking. The locomotive also features low noise levels and reduced operating costs, significantly enhancing its efficiency and reducing maintenance costs.
