India’s Tata Power has announced a strategic partnership with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation to execute a major hydropower project in Bhutan. This ambitious project, named “Khorlochhu,” aims to generate 600 megawatts of clean electricity, significantly contributing to meeting Bhutan’s growing energy demand and enhancing the country’s position as a regional hub for renewable energy.
The investment in the “Khorlochhu” project amounts to approximately INR 6,900 crores, reflecting the seriousness with which both companies are approaching this venture. The project is expected to take around five years to complete, with the necessary approvals for construction already obtained.
This project will bring substantial benefits to both countries. For Bhutan, it will help meet the rising demand for electricity, support economic growth, and improve the living standards of its people. For India, it will reinforce its status as a global power in renewable energy and contribute to its ambitious climate goals.
The partnership between Tata Power and Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation is seen as a strategic step that combines India’s expertise in renewable energy with local knowledge of the Bhutanese market. This collaboration is expected to serve as a model for public-private partnerships in the renewable energy sector.
The project comes at a time when Bhutan is experiencing positive changes in its renewable energy sector, with the Bhutanese government recently announcing plans to implement large-scale solar energy projects, underscoring its commitment to transitioning to clean energy sources.
