The Australian government unveiled a plan on Wednesday to build a huge solar power plant in the north of the country in a project that it said would be the “largest solar energy zone in the world”.

Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said that this huge solar farm will generate enough electricity to power three million homes.

The minister explained that the project includes solar panels and batteries, and at a later stage it will be connected by cable to Singapore to export energy to it.

“It will be the largest solar energy zone in the world, which will make Australia the world leader in green energy,” Plibersek said.

The 12,000-hectare Sanibel project, located in the sunny Northern Territory and backed by tech billionaire and environmental activist Mike Cannon-Brookes, will provide four gigawatts per hour for domestic use, and 2 gigawatts per hour will be exported to Singapore via submarine cable.

Australia is one of the largest exporters of coal and gas in the world, but it has been affected by the consequences of climate change, as the country is experiencing severe heatwaves, floods, and forest fires. Although Australians are among the most enthusiastic people in the world to install home solar panels, successive governments have been slow to adopt renewable energy sources.
