New data revealed that gas reserves in European underground storage facilities have surpassed 91%, or 100 billion cubic meters, although this lags behind the record levels of 2023, when the facilities were nearly 92% full. The trading price of gas on the European Exchange is about $420 per thousand cubic meters due to the situation related to gas transit through Ukraine following the Ukrainian armed forces’ attack on the Kursk region.
According to the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG), the volume of gas injection into underground storage facilities in the EU reached 315 million cubic meters. The European underground storage facilities are filled to 91.22%, which is 7.86% higher than the average for this period over the past five years, with a gas volume of 100.54 billion cubic meters.
The share of wind energy in electricity production in the EU fell to 13% in August. The total delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from terminals to the European gas transmission system in July was the lowest since November 2021, and the decline continues in August, with LNG regasification and reinjection capacity into European pipelines at 30% of the maximum. The average gas purchase price in Europe was $366 per thousand cubic meters in July, rising to $435 in August.
