Libya Halts Production at Two Oil Fields After Declaring Force Majeure

August 27, 2024

Production at two oil fields in Libya has been halted, with a third field reducing its output. The move comes as the government, elected by the parliament and based in Benghazi in eastern Libya, announced the suspension of oil production and exports until further notice. This decision is in protest against the Tripoli authorities’ takeover of the Libyan Central Bank’s headquarters and the dismissal of its governor.
In a press statement, the Libyan government emerging from the House of Representatives declared, “The declaration of force majeure on all oil fields and ports and the suspension of oil production and exports until further notice.”
The parallel government confirmed that the decision was made due to the “repeated attacks on the leadership, employees, and departments of the Central Bank by outlawed groups,” which aim to gain “illegal control over the most important financial institution in Libya.”
