Algeria Records Highest Electricity Consumption in Its History

July 15, 2024

Algeria’s Sonelgaz Group achieved a new historical milestone, recording its highest-ever electricity consumption, reaching 18,732 megawatts at 2:45 p.m.

According to a statement from Sonelgaz, this figure is unprecedented and reflects the significant recent increase in domestic electricity demand.

The statement emphasized that despite this record-high demand, Sonelgaz remains committed to meeting the needs of its customers in Algeria while maintaining the stability of the national electricity grid.

The statement also noted that Sonelgaz continues to export electricity to Tunisia without affecting local coverage.

Several factors, most notably the severe heatwave gripping the country and the increased reliance on electrical appliances in homes and businesses, are responsible for this surge in electricity consumption.

Sonelgaz is working on implementing numerous projects to increase production capacity and improve grid efficiency to meet the growing demand for electricity and ensure its stability.
