Algeria Supplies Lebanon with Fuel to Run Power Plants

August 19, 2024

The Algerian government has decided to immediately supply Lebanon with fuel to operate power plants and restore electricity across the country. Lebanon’s Electricité du Liban (EDL) announced a nationwide power outage last Saturday, including in vital facilities like the airport. The power supply will gradually resume once new fuel supplies are secured, either through a swap agreement with Iraq or other sources. Lebanon has suffered from a severe electricity shortage for years, particularly since the country fell into a prolonged financial crisis in 2019. Lebanese Energy Minister Walid Fayad said the country is awaiting gas shipments from Egypt by August 23, adding that “generators are providing temporary power to Beirut Airport for two days.” Homes and businesses largely rely on generators and increasingly on solar panels for power, as the state typically provides electricity for only a few hours a day. Lebanon’s weak government electricity supply depends on fuel provided by Iraq, but issues have arisen between the two countries due to Lebanon’s failure to pay for the supplies.
