Algeria: Supplying Europe with Electricity Produced via Gas and Alternative Energies

July 24, 2024

Algeria is on the brink of signing a significant agreement with international partners to establish a submarine cable project that will export electricity to Europe, announced Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab.

During his visit to the electrical system management center, Arkab emphasized that the state-owned companies Sonelgaz and Sonatrach are preparing to finalize contracts to link Europe with electricity through a Mediterranean submarine cable. Describing the agreement as “historic,” he noted that it would supply several European countries with electricity produced from gas and alternative energies.

In April, Arkab revealed that Algeria was considering exporting surplus electricity to Europe, underscoring the country’s status as a major electricity producer in the Mediterranean, with a production capacity of 25,000 megawatts.
