Algeria to Export Its Surplus Electricity to Europe

July 22, 2024

The Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, announced the imminent signing of an agreement between the Sonatrach and Sonelgaz groups with international partners to complete a marine electric line project linking Algeria to the European continent within the coming days.

According to the minister, this “historic” project aims to transfer electricity from Algeria to Europe, whether generated from natural gas or from renewable sources.

The implementation of the project will begin immediately after signing contracts with international partners, Arkab explained.

This step is part of Algeria’s efforts to strengthen its position as a regional and international player in the field of energy and diversify its sources of income, especially with the rise in demand for energy in Europe in light of the Ukrainian crisis.

It is expected that this project will contribute to supporting energy security in Europe and enhancing cooperation between Algeria and the countries of the European continent in the field of energy.
