Commencement of Draining 1.4 Million Liters of Fuel from the Stricken “MT Terranova”

August 14, 2024

The Philippine Coast Guard announced on Wednesday that operations to drain 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil from a sunken tanker in Manila Bay have commenced, three weeks after the vessel sank during a typhoon.

The Coast Guard noted that the stricken oil tanker, “MT Terranova,” had a total of eight tanks, each containing 175,000 liters of industrial fuel oil, which will be emptied during the operation. The tanker had capsized off the coast of the city of Limay, about 40 kilometers west of Manila, causing an unspecified amount of its cargo to leak into Manila Bay. The spill has affected the livelihoods of fishermen and coastal communities, reaching the provinces of Cavite, Bulacan, and Bataan.
