Comprehensive Carbon Footprint Management System in China by 2027

June 9, 2024

China has announced an ambitious plan to establish a comprehensive carbon footprint management system by 2027, as it seeks to achieve its ambitious climate goals.

This system aims to establish unified standards for measuring carbon emissions across various sectors, which will contribute to accelerating the pace of reducing emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.

This is an important step in China’s march towards a low-carbon future. It will work to enhance transparency and accountability regarding carbon emissions.

Unified carbon footprint measurement standards will contribute to motivating companies to adopt more sustainable practices and direct investments towards environmentally friendly projects.

The plan aims to launch carbon footprint calculation standards for about 100 major products by 2027, while expanding its scope to include 200 products by 2030.

These major products include coal, steel, natural gas, aluminium, lithium batteries and new energy vehicles.

Implementing a comprehensive carbon footprint management system is a major challenge. This requires close cooperation between various government agencies and the private sector. However, the potential benefits are enormous; this step will contribute to improving air quality, protecting the environment, and promoting sustainable development in the long term.

China’s plan to establish a carbon footprint management system represents an important step towards achieving its climate goals and promoting sustainable development.
