Britain reconsiders the price ceiling for energy

March 26, 2024

Discussions began, led by the British Gas and Electricity Markets Office, or what is known as “Ofgem,” about the possibility of changing the price ceiling for electricity, taking into account the preferential changes witnessed by the British market. The trend is more towards reducing consumption with the aim of achieving net zero emissions.

This price ceiling is set and imposed as a condition on energy suppliers. As it is not permissible for them to exceed it in collecting the prices of energy that they supply to British citizens, which change according to the economic segment to which the citizen belongs.

Ofgem suggested that there be something called a “dynamic price limit,” which means that the price of energy changes in a dynamic manner that changes based on the general demand for energy. So users are prompted to consume energy during times of low demand and similarly reduce their energy consumption during times of high demand.

Ofgem also proposed that a so-called “target price limit” be established, which aims to reduce energy prices for consumers at risk from rising energy prices. Ofgem set May 6, 2024 as the deadline for concerned parties to express their opinions regarding the future of the price ceiling. For energy.
