Growth in Electricity Production in OECD Countries Driven by Renewable Sources

August 28, 2024

Member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) witnessed growth in electricity production in May 2024, driven by strong generation from renewable sources. According to the latest monthly electricity statistics from the International Energy Agency (IEA), total net electricity production in OECD countries in May reached over 854 terawatt-hours, an increase of 3.7% compared to the same month in 2023, with renewable sources accounting for 39.4% of total production.

The IEA reported that electricity generation from renewables increased by 6.6% year-on-year, with solar power playing a crucial role in this growth, increasing its output by 19.7% compared to May 2023. Wind power generation also grew by 5.8%.

Additionally, nuclear energy contributed to the growth of clean electricity production in OECD countries, accounting for 16.7% of the electricity mix, with an output of 142,900 gigawatt-hours in May 2024.
