A German company relies on 200 hydrogen-powered trucks

April 17, 2024

MAN, the leading German truck and bus manufacturer, announced a new step towards the future of emissions-free transportation, by unveiling a limited production of 200 trucks powered by a hydrogen combustion engine.

These new trucks, called MAN GT GX, are capable of transporting a payload of more than 100 tons with low emissions limited to less than one gram of CO2/ton-kilometre. Which makes it compatible with European Union requirements for land transport.

With these new trucks, MAN aims to transport heavy loads, such as marine wind turbine parts or timber, thanks to its ability to transport a load of up to 250 tons.

However, doubts still surround the future of hydrogen technologies in the transportation sector, especially with MAN officials confirming their bias towards the production of battery-powered trucks. The company’s CEO, Alexander Vlaskamp, had previously declared a “war” on hydrogen applications, pointing to the high cost of non-renewable hydrogen. Compared to battery electric trucks; It is estimated at 13 or 14 euros.
