ACWA Power, the leading Saudi company in the field of renewable energy, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tunisian government to develop a huge project to produce green hydrogen.

The agreement was signed by the Tunisian Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines, Fatima Thabet, and the CEO of ACWA Power, Marco Arceli.

This agreement demonstrates the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting Tunisia’s efforts in the field of renewable energy. This confirms the depth of bilateral relations between the two countries.

This agreement represents a huge step towards enhancing Tunisia’s energy security and reducing carbon emissions, in line with its ambitious goals in the field of renewable energy.

In its early stages, the project aims to produce 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, with the possibility of expanding production in later stages to reach 600,000 tons annually.

The total investment cost of the project is estimated at approximately $6.2 billion, and the project includes developing other stages to increase the concentrated capacity from renewable energy sources to reach 12 gigawatts.

The project includes the establishment of a seawater desalination plant with a capacity of 50 thousand cubic meters per day, adjustable according to local needs.

Electricity production sites will be linked to hydrogen production and water desalination plants through the construction of 576 kilometers of high-voltage overhead transmission lines. A unit for ammonia production and another for export will also be established in Gabes or Skhira, depending on direct market opportunities.

The project is expected to contribute to reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy security, stimulating economic growth, providing new job opportunities, and contributing to the development of the local economy and strengthening Tunisia’s position as a leader in the field of renewable energy in the region.
