International expert: Green hydrogen will play a major and pivotal role in the future

March 19, 2024

The international expert in the field of renewable energy and energy transition, Ali Shaknan, stated that green hydrogen has a pivotal and major role in the safe transition process, in addition to the transition to new and renewable energy in order to become an alternative to the fossil energy strategy.

Although its contribution is small and does not exceed 4% of energy production worldwide, it will be able to provide the equivalent of 25% of energy needs in 2050. A professor specializing in resource physics and green hydrogen at the Algerian University of Laghouat announced that Algeria possesses advantages and qualifications that make it Eligible to become a major regional player in the process of developing green hydrogen energy, Algeria has a plan and a new path to launch a national strategy to develop green hydrogen through three stages ending in 2050.

During the year 2023, non-renewable energy was used, especially fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas, which leads to amplifying and accelerating the phenomenon of global warming. A question was raised by an expert at the climate conference in Paris 2015 about the causes of climate change and its consequences, and all countries of the world must To define its obligations with regard to reducing the gases that cause global warming; With the aim of eliminating the average increase in global temperatures so that it does not exceed two degrees Celsius.

Algeria plans to rely on green gas and hydrogen to transition to clean energy. Algeria has many qualifications to play a major regional role in developing green hydrogen, and among the qualifications that Algeria possesses is its distinguished geographical location; Algeria has vast and large areas of desert as one of the world's largest components of solar energy, in addition to its proximity to European markets, transportation networks, and infrastructure for transporting natural gas, which constitutes advantages for producing green hydrogen at competitive costs.

Algeria has developed a road map that represents a national strategy for developing hydrogen, which goes through three phases. The first extends from 2023 to 2030 and is considered a trial period with short-term projects. The second phase begins in 2030 to 2040 and is considered a preliminary period to create a compatible and favorable atmosphere in order to establish markets in the green hydrogen division. The third stage extends from 2040 to 2050 and is considered a decisive stage, as its success depends on the success of the previous two stages. It is considered a gateway to entry into real markets through competition, manufacturing, transportation, in addition to export.
