Chinese scientists develop a new strategy for producing green hydrogen

March 20, 2024

A team of Chinese scientists has developed an innovative renewable energy strategy to generate green hydrogen, using energy found between seawater and freshwater with high efficiency.

An innovative cascade circuit of high-performance ion exchange membrane and electrode was designed by researchers at Fudan University and is being installed in estuaries to extract osmotic energy and enhance hydrogen production.

The promising results of the study, recently published in the journal Nature Sustainability, show a constant and rapid rate of alkaline hydrogen evolution over a period of more than 12 days under an artificial salinity gradient.

This innovation is an important step towards enhancing the production of “green” hydrogen using renewable energy sources, and contributes directly to reducing carbon emissions in the energy sector and promoting the transition towards a more sustainable future.

The new technology for generating green hydrogen is an additional incentive to support leading industries such as hydrogen energy. This reinforces the Chinese government’s commitment to shifting towards clean and sustainable energy sources, as indicated by the government’s reports for this year.
