KAUST and NEOM Support Saudi Arabia’s Transition to a Green Economy

August 26, 2024

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has partnered with NEOM to support the transition to a green economy by developing sustainable hydrogen and fuel production technologies in the Kingdom through three advanced strategic applied research projects.

The partnership, initiated by NEOM’s Education, Research, and Innovation Foundation, involves the Hydrogen and E-Fuel Applied Research Institute (HEFARI) in developing hydrogen as a renewable energy source in collaboration with KAUST researchers and scientists. Progress in these projects was showcased at a summit recently held over two days at the KAUST Research and Technology Park.

The summit saw high-level participation from KAUST, NEOM’s Education, Research, and Innovation Foundation, HEFARI, ENOWA, Imperial College London, Saudi Aramco, HIAET, Cruise Saudi, Next 7, and Dow, discussing projects, challenges, and opportunities for developing the Kingdom’s green hydrogen economy. Experts and participants exchanged views on the economic production of green hydrogen and ammonia, their essential uses such as sustainable aviation fuel and marine propulsion, and discussed the development of electrolyzers, enhanced catalysts, membranes, and the requirements for manufacturing, transport, and storage.
