KSA – Chile Partnership in the Lithium Sector

July 30, 2024

Saudi-Chilean relations have developed significantly recently, as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has shown great interest in cooperating with Chile in the mining sector, especially in the field of lithium.

This step came within the framework of Saudi Arabia’s endeavor to diversify its economy away from oil and achieve its ambitions to become a global center for industries related to electric batteries.

KSA has shown great interest in partnering with the Chilean company Codelco due to its extensive experience in the field of mining and its production capabilities.

Through this partnership, the Kingdom seeks to benefit from Chilean expertise in developing lithium deposits and processing them locally.

The Kingdom confirmed that it seeks to import lithium from Chile and process it locally with the aim of producing electric car batteries and exporting them to global markets.

The dimensions of this partnership go beyond the purely commercial framework, as Saudi Arabia seeks through it to secure its supplies of vital minerals and enhance its position as a major player in the electric car industry.

Codelco is facing great challenges at the present time, but the Kingdom believes that this company has the necessary capabilities to cooperate and develop joint projects.

Through this partnership, Saudi Arabia seeks to achieve real economic diversification and reduce dependence on oil as a main source of income.

It is expected that this partnership will include dimensions related to environmental sustainability as the two countries seek to develop environmentally friendly projects.
