The United Kingdom, in cooperation with a group of European countries, is preparing to launch a large-scale campaign against the Russian “shadow fleet” of oil tankers that Moscow uses to circumvent international sanctions.
According to informed sources and documents presented by Bloomberg, the plan that will be presented at a meeting of European ministers in Britain next Thursday aims to exchange information about Russian oil tankers, coordinate efforts to obstruct their operations, and cooperate with the private sector and maritime authorities to combat these threats.
The documents indicate that the Russian “shadow fleet”, consisting of old and uninsured tankers, poses a danger to countries that rely on maritime transport, as many of these vessels are involved in violations of environmental safety and safety standards.
The documents indicate that some countries may impose additional sanctions on Russian “shadow fleet” tankers, including banning their entry to ports and preventing them from obtaining maritime services.
The participating countries are seeking to cut off Russia’s ways of benefiting from oil revenues, especially after the Group of Seven countries imposed sanctions aimed at preventing Russia from accessing oil tankers and major services unless the oil being transported is at a price lower than the specified ceiling.
These sanctions have led Moscow to resort to using old tankers operating outside official channels, which has increased the risk of leaks and environmental violations.
