Libya’s Largest Oil Field Halted by Protests

August 6, 2024

Production at Sharara, Libya’s largest oil field, has been completely shut down after local protesters from the Fezzan region blockaded the facility. The protesters are demanding improved living conditions and inclusion in development plans.

Residents of southern Libya, rich in oil resources, have long complained about inadequate public services, shortages of essential commodities like fuel and gas, and a lack of development projects. They accuse the government of neglecting their region.

The closure of the Sharara oil field, which produces approximately 315,000 barrels per day, is expected to cost Libya roughly one-third of its daily oil output and result in significant financial losses.

This disruption comes amidst ongoing political deadlock in the country, with no immediate resolution in sight. The Sharara field has been repeatedly targeted in the past due to political disputes and local grievances.
