Morocco Advances in 2024 Energy Transition Index

June 23, 2024

Morocco has climbed to 65th place globally in the 2024 Energy Transition Index, published by the World Economic Forum. Leading among Maghreb countries, Morocco outpaced Tunisia at 89th and Algeria at 91st in this index.

This achievement underscores Morocco’s efforts to enhance the sustainability of its energy system and diversify energy sources. The country has set an ambitious goal to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity generation mix to 52% by 2030, the second-largest target in the Arab region.

Morocco has reduced its reliance on fossil fuels from 82% in 2022 to 79% last year, aiming to further decrease coal dependency by halting planned projects in that sector while increasing the share of natural gas, which is less environmentally polluting.

Recognized as a leader in hydrogen energy in the region, Morocco has launched an ambitious project to produce and export green hydrogen to Europe. This initiative is seen as an opportunity for the kingdom to manage intermittent renewable energy sources and prepare for the emergence of a new hydrogen economy.
