Decrease in gas imports in Spain

April 16, 2024

Spain's imports of natural and liquefied gas decreased during March 2024, by 7.7% on a monthly basis, and this decline comes after a rise at the beginning of the year, with Algeria continuing to be the largest supplier of gas to Spain by 42%. Spain's imports of American liquefied gas fell to the rank Third, 18.2%.

While Belgium entered the top 5 gas exporters to Spain in March 2024, Spain’s imports of Nigerian LNG collapsed to fifth place, while LNG shipments from Egypt decreased significantly.

Despite this decline, gas stocks in Spain rose during March 2024 to 81%. Domestic demand for gas in Spain declined by 6.6% on an annual basis. These data indicate that Spain is striving to ensure its energy security by diversifying its sources and storing sufficient quantities of gas.
