After a month of cessation, “Ukraine” announces the resumption of electricity exports

April 22, 2024

After a month of hiatus due to Russian attacks, Ukraine has resumed electricity exports, starting Sunday, April 21, 2024, and while imports are still essential, the move signals a rapid repair of the severely damaged electricity grid.

Electricity exports stopped on March 24 after violent Russian attacks on energy facilities. Which led to a power outage in Kiev.

In response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries, Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure; Which led to a sharp rise in imports.

Ukraine was able to repair the damage more quickly than expected, with its exports returning to 8,430 MWh on Sunday, compared to 139 MWh of imports.

This speed of repair is due to Ukraine's ability to replace spare parts from its local factories, in addition to international assistance.

However, Ukraine still needs imports at times of peak consumption, and while the ministry notes that there are no expectations of a deficit in the electricity sector, the return of electricity exports is a positive sign of Ukraine's ability to withstand Russian attacks, and provides a major morale boost to the Ukrainian people.
