Resuming production in the “Khor Mor” field in “Iraqi Kurdistan” after it was targeted by drones

May 1, 2024

The Emirati company Dana Gas, operator of the Khor Mor natural gas field, announced that the wheel of production has returned to rotation, 5 days after it stopped following a drone attack, in a step that indicates the return of activity in one of the most important energy sources in the Kurdistan region, noting that it has taken security measures. Strict measures to ensure the safety of workers and facilities.

This step comes after close cooperation between the company, the Iraqi government, and the Kurdistan Regional Government to enhance security at the field site.

Khor Mor field is the largest natural gas field in the Kurdistan region. Its reserves are estimated at about 8 trillion and 200 billion cubic feet, and the gas produced from the field contributes to the operation of power plants in Erbil, Chamchamal, and Bazian. Which provides more than 80% of the region’s electricity needs.

The resumption of production in the Khor Mor field represents a positive step towards stabilizing energy supplies in the Kurdistan region.

The repeated attacks indicate the continuing security challenges that threaten this vital sector.

It is the responsibility of the Iraqi authorities and the Kurdistan Regional Government to take decisive steps to enhance security in energy fields, ensure the continued flow of production to meet the needs of citizens and develop the economy.
