India's gas imports are expected to grow by 8% despite their decline in April

May 9, 2024

India's liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports saw a slight decline in April, while expectations point to strong growth in the rest of the year.

The decrease in imports in April reached 2.03 million tons from 2.22 million tons in March, while imports increased slightly compared to April 2023, on an annual basis.

Qatar remains the largest supplier of LNG to India, followed by the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
India's LNG imports are expected to grow by 7-8% in 2024, reaching 100 million tons.

Demand for gas has increased in the electricity generation, industry and transportation sectors, while liquefied gas prices have decreased. This encourages increased purchases and increased local production of natural gas, but not enough to meet the growing demand.

India plans to increase the share of gas in the energy mix from 6% to 15% by 2030. Increasing liquefied gas imports will enhance energy security in India and diversify energy sources. It will also support growth in key economic sectors such as electricity generation and industry, and will contribute to reducing carbon emissions. By replacing coal with gas.
