Oil production declined and refineries in Russia and Ukraine were disrupted due to the war

May 12, 2024

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has targeted facilities vital to the energy sector in both countries; Which led to a partial disruption of some oil refineries and a decline in production capacity.

On May 9, a Ukrainian attack hit Russia's Neftekhim Salavat refinery; Which led to the shutdown of one of the catalytic cracking unit devices, and a decline in the production of the refinery, which is considered one of the most important Russian oil refineries as it produces the equivalent of 600 thousand tons of gasoline annually.

Just one day later, Ukraine launched another drone attack on an oil refinery in the Kaluga region, southwest of Moscow. Which led to a fire breaking out in a number of containers, and the catalytic cracking unit building was damaged, but no casualties were reported.

The Russian company Gazprom announced that the refinery will return to work within a week or a week and a half after repairing the damage.

It is estimated that drone attacks have disrupted about 15% of Russia's refining capacity during the past few months. On the other hand, Ukraine claims that it does not target civilians, but rather aims to destroy military infrastructure and prevent Russia from financing its war.

For its part, Russia responded to the attacks by launching retaliatory strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure, and accused Ukraine of carrying out "terrorist attacks."

These mutual attacks on vital installations confirm the severity of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and show the extent of its impact on the global economy, especially with growing fears of a shortage in energy supplies.
