A historic agreement between “Türkiye”, “Azerbaijan” and “Turkmenistan” to guarantee the flow of gas

May 15, 2024

Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan signed a historic agreement to ensure the flow of natural gas from Turkmenistan to Türkiye via Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The agreement extends over eight years, until 2030, with the expectation that additional quantities of natural gas from Caspian Sea resources will arrive in Turkey.

Part of this natural gas will be directed to Europe via Türkiye. Which enhances its role as an energy commercial center. As Türkiye is one of the largest natural gas markets in Europe and relies on importing most of its gas needs; Therefore, this agreement will help Türkiye diversify its energy sources and achieve the desired energy security.

It is noteworthy that, in March 2024, Turkey signed a memorandum of understanding regarding natural gas with Turkmenistan, with two options for transporting the gas, either via Iran or Azerbaijan. Then the transportation route via Azerbaijan and Georgia was agreed upon in this new tripartite agreement.
