Eight international companies have formed an alliance aiming to develop natural gas and expand its production. In light of this, the companies participating in the alliance concluded a memorandum of understanding aimed at increasing awareness about the supply of synthetic gas and its ability to meet the rising demand, coinciding with countries’ efforts to transition to clean energy.
The coalition members aim to give the project a global character, due to its role in accelerating the pace of energy transition and eliminating carbon, in addition to enhancing climate goals. Electrical natural gas is defined as synthetic gas and is sometimes called sustainable synthetic methane.
It is produced through a mixture of green hydrogen and carbon dioxide, especially after it has been subjected to a recycling process. Its molecules are very similar to traditional natural gas, and its advantages include ease of transportation and storage in addition to using the available infrastructure. This matter does not require the establishment of new specialized facilities, and natural gas offers a sustainable solution. For consumers, it does not require or require any modifications in operational processes and industrial applications.
Electric natural gas, or methane, plays an alternative role to fossil fuels, which enhances its ability to produce and spread on a deeper and wider scale. Electric natural gas is considered a quick alternative as it works to reduce energy sector emissions. Due to the readily available components of its production, it relies on proven technologies and requires a declaration of discovery and specialized scientific development.
It competes with traditional gas in terms of cost. The developers confirm that the cost of its production will be less than the resources that require several technologies in order to produce gas, and there are serious steps that have begun to be implemented on the ground to develop the production of electric natural gas, as 8 international companies have formed an alliance to develop and produce sustainable gas.
There is a decisive step in light of the alliance companies’ readiness to announce new details during the first half of 2024. The alliance includes 8 companies, including 4 Japanese companies: Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas, Toho Gas, Mitsubishi, and 2 French companies, namely Total Energy and Engie. A Belgian company, TES, and an American company, Sempra Infrastructure.
The alliance companies rely on electric natural gas to support the transition to clean energy, as the companies plan to spread this technology globally, especially in light of the presence and availability of industrial capabilities and the necessary investments. The alliance aims to increase awareness about the uses of artificial gas so that its availability increases on the global level at appropriate and sustainable prices.
The companies aim to trade electric natural gas; It includes establishing a method for estimating emissions and issuing the necessary documents, in addition to strengthening the value chain. TES CEO Marco Alvera stated that the alliance contains the largest companies in the industry, and the alliance will work to strengthen and build a strong global market for the synthetic gas that it aims to develop.
The Belgian company expects that by 2030, two million tons of electrical natural gas can be produced annually, which equates to 15.4 terawatt hours per year, in addition to recycling 2,750 million tons of carbon dioxide as a raw material used in gas production.
The electric natural gas sector faces several challenges, including, for example, the interruption of the production process witnessed by renewable energy sources, in addition to ensuring the security of supplies in order to avoid the problems of storing hydrogen in order for natural gas to be produced, in addition to its storage and ease of circulation, and electric natural gas is considered one of the aspects of storing solar energy. Which ensures a sustainable electricity supply during days without sunlight.
