“Morocco” secures its gas needs away from “Algeria”

May 30, 2024

Morocco's import of natural gas represents 90% of its total consumption, while domestic production provides only 110 million cubic meters out of one billion cubic meters annually.

Following Algeria's sudden decision to stop exporting, the Kingdom succeeded in securing its needs through various sources, leaving behind its total dependence on Algerian gas.

Spain topped the list of natural gas suppliers to Morocco. It imports it from different countries, such as Algeria, Russia, Nigeria, and the United States.

Gas is pumped from Spain to Morocco via the Maghreb-European pipeline in the reverse direction, after reaching an agreement between the two countries.

The source of the gas pumped to Morocco cannot be accurately determined; It is mixed with gas imported from other sources.

The Kingdom did not submit itself to total dependence on Spain, but rather turned to other options to secure its needs, the most important of which was purchasing liquefied gas from the spot market and shipping it to Spanish ports, then converting it into gas and pumping it through the Maghreb-European pipeline.

Other options include an additional guarantee to secure Morocco's needs. The Kingdom signed a deal with Shell to obtain 500 million cubic meters of liquefied gas annually for 12 years.

Morocco seeks to enhance its energy security and reduce its dependence on imported natural gas by increasing domestic production, and the Kingdom is intensifying its efforts to search for new opportunities to explore and produce natural gas within its territory.

Morocco is enhancing its investments in renewable energy, such as solar and wind energy. To diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
