Massive discoveries of natural gas reserves off its northern coast have pushed Mozambique to the top of the global energy map as a potential major player.
Mozambique's natural gas reserves are estimated at more than 180 trillion cubic feet; Which puts the country at the forefront of countries rich in natural resources in Africa.
These huge discoveries attracted the attention of major international energy companies, such as Total Energy of France, ExxonMobil of America, and Eni of Italy.
These companies compete to invest in liquefied natural gas projects. In an effort to benefit from the growing demand for this clean fuel globally.
Mozambique is expected to become a major exporter of liquefied gas over the next decade, with revenues from this sector expected to reach $500 billion by 2045.
This is expected to contribute to the growth of the country's economy significantly. Expectations indicate an increase in real GDP by 24% between 2021 and 2025.
LNG projects in Mozambique are in their various stages, from exploration and development to production and export, and include Coral Sol, which is being developed by the Italian company Eni, which is a floating LNG platform with a capacity of 3.5 million tons per year, Coral North with a capacity of 3.5 million tons per year, and Rovuma Gas. Al-Lamsal, a huge project with a capacity of 18 million tons annually, is led by the American company Exxon Mobil in cooperation with other partners.
These projects contribute to attracting huge foreign investments to Mozambique. Which contributes to creating new job opportunities and improving the country’s infrastructure. However, this boom is not without some challenges, such as environmental and energy security concerns.
