OPEC warns against calls to abandon oil

March 25, 2024

OPEC Secretary-General Haitham Al-Ghais made statements to Kuwait News Agency “KUNA” regarding dependence on oil. He described oil as “the backbone of life” and it cannot be abandoned in any way.

Al-Ghais criticized international calls encouraging the abandonment of oil. It is believed that it contributes 31% of the global energy mix, which is the basis of life for all human beings and is involved in almost all of their activities. It is responsible for their means of transportation and the electricity they use in industry and other areas of life.

Al-Ghais drew attention to the danger of abandoning oil, which will lead to the cessation of various forms of life, as searching for an alternative to oil, which is characterized by its availability and ease of extraction and refining, is not an easy matter.

OPEC's important role in this regard comes as it carries out awareness campaigns to promote the role of oil and refute calls for its final elimination. Because its eventual disposal will have implications for renewable and clean energy as well, because wind turbines and solar panels use oil to produce energy.
