Expanding cooperation between Tunisia and Italy in the field of energy

March 28, 2024

The areas of partnership and cooperation between Tunisia and Italy are witnessing a remarkable expansion in the energy and hydrocarbons sector, with a special focus on securing and exploiting the Transmed pipeline for transporting Algerian gas to Italy, and producing green hydrogen and exporting it to Europe.

The Transmed pipeline plays a pivotal role in ensuring the supply of natural gas to Tunisia, along with Italy and Slovenia. Pumping additional quantities of Algerian natural gas to Italy has enabled Tunisia to raise the value of the rights it obtains from the two countries in exchange for the passage of the pipeline.

Tunisia's gains from the Italy-Algeria agreement in 2022 were estimated at more than 500 million dinars (160.13 million US dollars). It is worth noting that Tunisia is facing a global energy crisis. It seeks to raise the contribution of renewable energy to the electricity mix to 35% by 2030, and Tunisia plans to cooperate with Italy in the field of producing green hydrogen and exporting it to Europe.
