Fuel sales in Morocco increased by 3.75%

April 7, 2024

Fuel sales in Morocco increased by 3.75% during 2023, supported by increased demand for fuel in the Kingdom. Total diesel and gasoline sales reached 6.78 million tons, equivalent to 8.12 billion liters, an increase from 6.53 million tons (7.83 billion liters) in 2022.

Despite this, the value of fuel sales decreased by 7%; It reached 79 billion dirhams ($7.85 billion) in 2023, compared to 85 billion dirhams ($8.45 billion) in 2022.

The Competition Council indicated that this decrease is due to the decline in global oil prices. The total number of gas stations in Morocco reached 3,350, of which 2,491 stations (75%) belong to the 9 companies active in the market.

The data showed that diesel and gasoline imports in Morocco decreased by 21.5%, in value terms, to 52.7 billion dirhams in 2023, and revenues from the consumer tax on fuel reached 18.34 billion dirhams, a decrease of 0.4% from 2022.

The value-added tax on the fuel market decreased from 8.61 billion dirhams to 7.23 billion dirhams, a decrease of 16%, and 6 new players entered the market for importing, storing and distributing fuel. Which led to a decrease in the market shares of the nine companies concerned with the report from 92.6% to 89%. The Competition Council confirmed that these developments have improved the competitive performance of the fuel market in Morocco.

These data indicate that the fuel market in Morocco witnessed growth in sales volume during the year 2023, while the value of sales decreased due to the decline in global oil prices, and it is expected that the market will continue to grow in the coming years with increased demand for fuel.

The value of fuel sales declined despite the increase in sales volume, due to the decline in global oil prices, and the government achieved less tax revenues from fuel in 2023, which led to the entry of new players into the market, which led to increased competition.
