“Atomic Energy” criticizes “Iran”: it is not cooperating in its nuclear program

May 8, 2024

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, strongly criticized Iran. For not cooperating adequately with the agency's investigation into its nuclear program.

Following a visit to Iran, Grossi expressed his disappointment in the level of cooperation, and urged Iranian leaders to take “immediate and concrete” steps to address international concerns about their nuclear activities.

Grossi stressed the urgency of the situation, stressing that “the current situation is completely unsatisfactory,” acknowledging the complexity of the issues at hand, and stressing that “there are no quick solutions” to the challenges facing the agency.

Grossi reaffirmed the validity of the existing agreement, but called for adding “additional content” to ensure real progress.

He highlighted the importance of adhering to safeguards and monitoring procedures to address the concerns of the international community and maintain transparency regarding the Iranian nuclear program.

Grossi's frank criticism indicates growing concern about the breakdown in cooperation between Iran and the IAEA, and highlights the urgent need for tangible progress in addressing international concerns about Iran's nuclear program.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has long been seeking clarifications from Iran regarding two suspicious sites near Tehran believed to house undeclared nuclear activities.

Despite previous agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation, including an agreement reached during Grossi's last visit to Iran in March 2023, progress has remained slow.

Iran reduced the number of inspections it allows to the International Atomic Energy Agency, and withdrew the accreditation of a group of agency experts. Which further complicated the situation.
