Oil Tanker Capsizes off the Coast of Oman and Fears of a Leak

July 17, 2024

The crew of the oil tanker that capsized off the port of Duqm in Oman is still missing, a day after the Comoros-flagged tanker was reported to have sunk.

The Omani Maritime Security Center explained that the tanker’s crew consists of 16 individuals, 13 Indians, and three Sri Lankans, and that the tanker has still “sunk and capsized” so far.

It has not been confirmed whether the tanker has stabilized or whether there has been a leak of oil or other oil products from the tanker into the sea.

According to shipping data, the tanker was on its way to Aden, Yemen, and is a 117-meter oil products tanker built in 2007.

The Omani News Agency reported that the Omani authorities conducted a search and rescue operation at the scene of the accident in coordination with other maritime authorities.

The Port of Duqm is located on the southwestern coast of Oman, close to major oil and gas mining projects in the country, including a major oil refinery that forms part of the Duqm Industrial Park, the largest single economic project in Oman.
