Oman Launches an Ambitious Project to Increase Liquefied Gas Production

July 30, 2024

The Sultanate of Oman announced ambitious plans to enhance its capabilities in producing and exporting liquefied natural gas by building a new gas production locomotive.

This announcement comes at a time when the world is witnessing a shift toward renewable energy sources, but Oman believes that the demand for natural gas will remain high for years to come.

The new project is expected to contribute to increasing Oman’s production capacity of liquefied natural gas by a third, bringing the total to 15.2 million tons annually.

The new locomotive will be built near the gas production facility in Qalhat, ensuring operational efficiency and reducing costs.

The Omani government seeks to complete design studies for the project and begin operation by 2029.

Oman’s plans are not limited to increasing the production of liquefied natural gas but rather to join other countries in the region, such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, which are also seeking to enhance their production capabilities from this fossil fuel.

Middle Eastern countries believe that global demand for natural gas will remain high for years to come, especially in light of the shift toward less polluting energy sources than coal.

Gas export revenues are considered an important source of national income, which contributes to achieving economic stability.

While Middle Eastern countries are betting on continued demand for natural gas, some analysts warn that global gas consumption may reach its peak by the end of the current decade.
